Ten years ago this month, the new Conservative government introduced its marquee piece of legislation, the Federal Accountability Act. The bill made it through Parliament with lightning speed, even garnering the support of the New Democrats, and making it through an Upper Chamber dominated by the Liberals. Voices who warned of the Act’s unintended consequences were largely ignored, in the haste to have it passed. Now, a decade later, four Canadians who closely watched the implementation of the Accountability Act share their analysis.
