I\u2019m not entirely sure why I write about my personal experiences<\/a> parenting a child with autism for the mainstream media.\u00a0 Mostly I hope my own experiences may help someone else on their autism journey \u2013 and they won\u2019t stumble through as I have done in the early days. \u00a0Parenting a child with autism is challenging, joyful, frustrating, heart-wrenching and rewarding all jumbled together.\u00a0 \u00a0Making those experiences heard is also an important step toward wider acceptance of autism in the community at large.<\/p>\n

But what I\u2019m never quite prepared for are the letters I get whenever I publish something about autism in the mainstream press.\u00a0 Here are a few responses that never fail to happen.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Someone writes to tell me vaccines cause autism.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Can we just stop this already?\u00a0 Vaccines don\u2019t cause autism<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 They never did.\u00a0 The study that kicked off this speculation was proven to rely on falsified data and the author had financial motives for making up his findings.\u00a0 The journal retracted the study<\/a> years ago and the author has been widely discredited.<\/p>\n

    If that\u2019s not enough to placate, there have been dozens of significant studies<\/a> trying to establish such a link just in case, and all of them came to the same conclusion: there\u2019s no relationship between autism and childhood vaccinations.\u00a0 End of.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Someone writes to tell me they have the cure for autism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The people who send me these kinds of letters are either snake oil salesmen preying on parental hope purely for monetary gain but also people who really think they\u2019ve single handedly stumbled on the cure and want to spread the good news.\u00a0 In either case, save your breath.<\/p>\n

      There\u2019s no known cure for autism.\u00a0 Yes, many studies<\/a> have shown there are some excellent therapies (behaviour, speech, occupational, sensory, drug, diet) that may help enhance certain abilities or lessen certain behaviours in some individuals with autism, but these are not cures.<\/p>\n

      We\u2019ll all be better off if we stop seeing the individual with autism as \u2018sick\u2019 or \u2018broken\u2019 and in need of a cure and provide them with the supports they need to live and thrive in the community instead.<\/p>\n

      1. Someone writes to tell me I\u2019ve caused my son\u2019s autism.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Yes, really.\u00a0 I like to call them jackasses, but I believe other journalists call them \u2018trolls.\u2019 Turns out trolls don\u2019t just save their bullshit for political commentators but share their misery with parenting columnists too.<\/p>\n

        I\u2019ve been told my son has autism because: I fed him formula as a baby (no), I was on anti-depressants while pregnant (nope), I fed him genetically engineered foods (sigh) and, of course, because I had him vaccinated (of course I did \u2013 read #1).\u00a0 One special jackass told me it was \u2018karma.\u2019<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Someone offers me money. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          See -it\u2019s not all bad.\u00a0 Strangers also offer to send me money to help me parent my son with autism.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the sweetest gesture and my faith in humanity is always restored by these letters.<\/p>\n

          I thank them, but always kindly decline and recommend they give to a local autism charity instead.\u00a0 There are many autism families that are in far greater need than myself (raising a child is expensive \u2013 raising a child with autism is astronomical) and the front line autism charities are the best at putting resources where they are needed most.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Someone offers my son gifts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Many readers want to send my son gifts.\u00a0 It happens every time I write.<\/p>\n

            It is such a beautiful gesture and I am touched by every offer.\u00a0 But again \u2013 for reasons of protecting privacy and because my son is already spoiled rotten, I always say no.\u00a0 Again, I recommend they donate to an autism charity and I think many of them actually do this.<\/p>\n

            People, it turns out, can be very kind.<\/p>\n

            I did accept one time: when the city transportation office offered a tour of the local bus facilities after a story about how much my son loves city buses (he memorizes the bus routes and \u2018articulated bus\u2019 was one of his first toddler phrases).\u00a0 They gave us a half day tour and a goodie basket full of bus-related items.\u00a0 My son still talks about it today.<\/p>\n

            None of these responses ever stop me from writing.\u00a0 In fact, the first few make it clear how badly I need to keep writing to combat the misinformation that\u2019s still floating around out there.\u00a0 But the best news?\u00a0 The kind gestures always outnumber the jackasses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
