Her views\u00a0are nuanced and they go against the grain of much recent writing on research ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenbaum&#8217;s essays have generated many responses (the Lown Institute has collected some of them <a href=\"https:\/\/lowninstitute.org\/news\/commentaries\/special-rightcare-weekly-response-to-the-nejm-conflict-of-interest-series\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). I examine\u00a0Rosenbaum&#8217;s views\u00a0in an essay\u00a0in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/121964\/theres-more-one-kind-conflict-interest-medical-research\" target=\"_blank\">New Republic<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(and on this blog <a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/2015\/05\/26\/why-conflict-of-interest-disclosures-are-essential-in-medical-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>)<em>.<\/em>\u00a0I&#8217;m sympathetic to many of her\u00a0arguments, but I think\u00a0we need <em>more<\/em> transparency in science, not less. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/afrakt\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Frakt<\/a> explores her views <a href=\"https:\/\/theincidentaleconomist.com\/wordpress\/my-moral-struggles-with-journal-article-meta-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theincidentaleconomist.com\/wordpress\/non-financial-conflicts-of-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theincidentaleconomist.com\/wordpress\/how-physicians-use-financial-conflicts-of-interest-disclosures\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Rosenbaum has elicited some incredibly\u00a0harsh rejoinders, including one from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2942\" target=\"_blank\">two former editors-in-chief<\/a> of the <em>NEJM<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This discussion has been\u00a0intense because the stakes are very high. If\u00a0manipulated research data allow bad drugs to enter\u00a0the market, people can die. Conversely, if unjustified prejudice against industry slows the progress of research, that could kill people too.
