We understood that hospitals were at risk of overflowing, and we knew we needed to prepare for that. There were also a million other things that we didn\u2019t or couldn\u2019t predict would happen due to COVID-19, but if we have learned anything, it\u2019s to expect the unexpected. And we certainly have got better at it.<\/p>\n<p>This virus is not the only existential threat that humanity currently faces. Climate change is here, and Canadians are seeing its disastrous effects. We collectively failed to address it before entire towns in <a href=\"https:\/\/edmonton.ctvnews.ca\/a-look-back-5-years-after-the-fort-mcmurray-wildfire-1.5411861\">Alberta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thecurrent\/the-current-for-sept-7-2021-1.6166608\/2-months-after-lytton-b-c-was-destroyed-by-fire-its-future-is-still-unclear-1.6171191\">British Columbia<\/a> were destroyed forest fires, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/10\/05\/canada-disastrous-impact-extreme-heat#:~:text=The%20BC%20Coroners%20Service%2C%20a,years%20of%20age%20or%20older.\">people died as a result of heat waves<\/a>, and before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/british-columbia\/article-bc-ranchers-who-suffered-catastrophic-flood-damage-desperate-for-help\/\">neighbourhoods were transformed into shallow lakes<\/a>. And the reality is, it\u2019s only going to get worse from here.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, as we scale up efforts to soften the impacts of climate change, we need to also work toward adapting to them. We have to alter our policies and investments around infrastructure so that we can adapt.<\/p>\n<p>But much like the pandemic, changes in the climate are extremely unpredictable, so how do we know what those investments should be and prepare for the challenges that we do not expect?<\/p>\n<p>Today on the podcast, host <a href=\"https:\/\/irpp.org\/people\/#colm-orsquosullivan\">Colm O&#8217;Sullivan<\/a> speaks with Ryan Ness. Ryan is adaptation research director at the <a href=\"https:\/\/climatechoices.ca\/\">Canadian Institute for Climate Choices (CICC)<\/a>.
