The stated goal of the panel was to find ways to get Alberta a better deal in the federation, and promote the province\u2019s economic interests along the way.<\/p>\n<p>In the recommendations, some of the items are now standard fare for Alberta politics, including the referendum on equalization promised by Premier Jason Kenney. Others, like establishing a provincial police force and withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>This week on the podcast, we take a deep dive into the policy and politics of the Fair Deal Panel, and what they tell us about Alberta today, with Trevor Tombe and Melanee Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Trevor Tombe is an associate professor of economics and a research fellow at the University of Calgary School of Public Policy. He\u2019s also the author of the IRPP paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/irpp.org\/research-studies\/an-overdue-review-of-canadas-fiscal-stabilization-program\/\"><em>An (Overdue) Review of Canada\u2019s Fiscal Stabilization Program<\/em><\/a>, which we discussed on <a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/fr\/magazines\/march-2020\/the-deal-with-fiscal-stabilization\/\">an earlier podcast<\/a>. Melanee Thomas is an associate professor of political science at the University of Calgary. She\u2019s written several pieces for <em>Policy Options<\/em>, including one about <a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/fr\/magazines\/juin-2019\/as-albertas-anger-deepens-it-gets-harder-to-turn-off\/\">separatist anger in Alberta<\/a> and another about <a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/fr\/magazines\/november-2019\/jason-kenneys-case-of-quebec-envy\/\">Jason Kenney\u2019s focus on Quebec<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Download for free.
