Now, Canadian premiers have a long history of taking shots at equalization.\u00a0But what\u2019s different here is Kenney\u2019s focus on fiscal stabilization. It\u2019s a program most of us are likely unfamiliar with, or were until recently. But Kenney is tying these two programs together \u2013 describing fiscal stabilization as an \u201cequalization rebate\u201d \u2013 and saying that it, too, isn\u2019t giving Alberta its due.<\/p>\n<p>So, what exactly is fiscal stabilization, and how does it relate to equalization? Will these programs be reformed? Should they be?<\/p>\n<p>Today on the podcast,\u00a0we&#8217;re joined by James Feehan, an honorary research professor and former professor of economics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He\u2019s the author of a recent IRPP Insight, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/irpp.org\/research-studies\/canadas-equalization-program-political-debates-and-opportunities-for-reform\/\">Canada\u2019s Equalization Program: Political Debates and Opportunities for Reform<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>We&#8217;re also joined by Trevor Tombe, an associate professor of economics and a research fellow at the University of Calgary\u2019s School of Public Policy.
